Putting your baby back to sleep 5 or 6 times a night? Second guessing motherhood? Resenting your snoring husband while your baby is screaming? I've been there!
Hi! I'm Katie Pitts, certified pediatric sleep consultant and the founder of Sleep Wise Consulting. I have a bachelor's degree in speech and hearing science and a dual master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Educational Administration. I have worked as a speech-language pathologist in a school setting for 7 years, working with children ages 3 to 21.
In March of 2014, my husband, Aaron, and I discovered we were going to have a baby. We are both type A personalities and big planners so we got everything ready! We took all the classes, read the pregnancy books, bought all the right gear...we were ready!
Our son, Andrew, gave us our first surprise when he came 7 weeks early! I decided to temporarily leave my job in order to stay home to care for him. I second guessed that decision every morning when I realized that he might not ever sleep through the night or stop being cranky during the day!
From the moment we brought our son home from the hospital, in the words of Will Smith from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, "my life got flip-turned upside down". My husband and I said goodbye to sleep in longer increments than 90 minutes. What is going on? We took the classes...we were prepared...we thought we were doing everything right...but we quickly realized we did not know anything about infants and sleep!
In a long 12 weeks, I had lost myself and was falling apart. I was edgy, couldn't concentrate, tired all the time...and worst of all, I wasn't able to fully enjoy my time with my son! I hit my breaking point the morning after my husband and I took turns, in 90 minute increments, holding our son while he slept. That morning, I told Aaron "enough is enough"! I found a resource who taught me the importance of teaching our son independent sleep skills. Although the first few nights were not easy, it was one of the best things I could have done for our family. My son's demeanor changed into a happy little boy because he was finally getting the sleep he needed...and I became myself again and fell in love with being a mom!
After this, I jumped at the opportunity to become a sleep consultant and began my certification process. As a certified consultant, I've undergone a comprehensive training and mentoring program which has given me the very best tools and knowledge available to help you get your little one sleeping through the night. I started Sleep Wise Consulting to help moms like me (and their little ones) get more sleep! I've had a very positive experience from implementing my training and I believe in it with my heart and soul. I used these techniques and strategies with my second son starting on day 1 and the results were amazing! We never had to "sleep train" and he was sleeping through the night by 12 weeks (and he was born 6 weeks early as well)! I'm passionate about sleep and would love to get the opportunity to help your family sleep through the night!
If you are looking at my website, chances are that you've been thinking about a good night's sleep for awhile now...I can make your dream a reality! My promise is to work with you and support you as you venture through this sleep journey.
