What Parents Should Know About Bedtime Routines

Infant Sleep

If you’ve ever headed off to Dr. Google (or even your real life pediatrician!) with the complaint “My child won’t sleep!” then you’ve most likely been introduced to the idea of a baby bedtime routine.

Not all bedtime routines are created equal, however. Let’s talk about some common baby bedtime routine questions and then look at the biggest mistake made my parents when helping their babies go to sleep.

Why Your Baby Needs a Bedtime Routine

A bedtime routine isn’t just a nice idea…it’s essential! Babies learn through patterns and repetition. When you do the same things in the same order every evening, your baby begins to recognize that it’s time to wind down and go to sleep.

These consistent cues help your little one:

  • Transition from day to night
  • Feel calm and secure
  • Learn how to self-soothe — a crucial step toward independent sleep

How Long Should It Take?

A good bedtime routine should take about 20–30 minutes

That’s long enough to calm your baby and signal “sleep time,” but short enough to prevent overstimulation or fatigue.

If bedtime feels like it’s taking hours, it’s time to simplify!

What to Include in Your Baby’s Bedtime Routine

Bedtime routines that begin with a bath can cue your baby to what is to come and help them prepare for sleep.

Here’s an easy, step-by-step bedtime routine that works beautifully for most babies:

  1. Bath or Warm Wipe-Down – A soothing way to signal that the day is over.
  1. Pajamas and Fresh Diaper – Cozy comfort helps your baby feel ready for rest.
  1. Feed (if needed) – Offer the last feeding of the day, but do not let your baby fall asleep while eating!
  1. Quiet Connection Time – Sing a song or read a short book. Keep the lights on and don’t send any cues that they should be falling asleep during this steep
  2. Bedtime – Lay your baby down awake– This is key to helping them learn how to fall asleep on their own

Remember: simple and consistent wins every time. You don’t need to overcomplicate it — sweet and predictable is best.

The Most Common Bedtime Routine Mistakes

You might be doing all of the above and still wondering why your baby doesn’t sleep well.

The culprit? Feeding or rocking your baby to sleep.

It’s incredibly common — and understandable! Those cuddly moments are precious. But when your baby falls asleep in your arms or while eating, they begin to rely on you to recreate those conditions every time they wake during the night.

That’s called a sleep association, and it’s one of the main reasons babies wake up frequently and can’t settle back to sleep without help.

How To Fix Sleep Associations

If your baby already needs to be fed or rocked to sleep, don’t worry — you can make gentle changes.

Here’s how to adjust the order of your routine:

  • Move the feeding earlier in the routine, before reading or singing.
  • End the routine with a calm activity like a short song or story.
  • Lay your baby down awake, not asleep, so they can start to associate their crib with falling asleep.

By making this simple switch, you’re helping your baby learn to drift off independently — and that means longer stretches of sleep for everyone.

The Most Important Step Of All

Your baby’s perfect bedtime routine ends with this:

Put your baby in bed awake, not asleep.

This small change makes a huge difference. It’s the foundation of independent sleep and the key to helping your baby sleep through the night.

So tonight, take a look at your bedtime routine. Tweak what needs adjusting, stop feeding or rocking all the way to sleep, and help your little one learn the skills of a true Sleep Wise sleeper.

Better nights start with one bedtime — and it begins tonight.
