Going Out to Dinner with Kids While on a Sleep Schedule
How to Dress Your Baby for Sleep in the Winter
As parents, winter often raises a big question: How do I dress my baby for sleep so they stay warm, but safe?
Dressing babies overnight in colder months can feel confusing, especially when temperatures drop and the instinct is to bundle them up!
This is one of the most common questions families ask during the winter season, and below you’ll find the same guidance we share with our Sleep Wise families.

Babies Don’t Need Heavy Layers to Sleep Well
One of the first things we remind parents is this:
It’s actually safer for a baby to be slightly too cool than slightly too warm. (AAP Reference)
Overheating is a known risk factor for unsafe sleep.
The goal is comfortable, layered warmth, not bundling or thick, bulky clothing.
That’s why visual guidance is so helpful! We always share the following graphic with our Sleep Wise families as it removes the guesswork and clearly shows what your baby should wear based on the room temperature.
How to Dress Your Baby for Sleep In Winter: Temperature & TOG Guide
Here’s the graphic we use with families to make winter dressing easy and safe:

What This Chart Shows
Sleep sacks act as wearable blankets, providing the primary source of warmth.
TOG (Thermal Overall Grade) measures how warm the sleep sack is:
- Higher TOG = warmer
- Lower TOG = cooler
- You adjust your baby’s pajamas based on room temperature, while the sleep sack adds the consistent, safe layer on top.
Temperature Examples
- Under 63°F (17°C): 2.0 TOG + long-sleeve bodysuit + footed pajamas
- 64–70°F (18–21°C): 1.0 TOG + footed pajamas or long-sleeve bodysuit
- 71–77°F (22–25°C): 0.5 TOG + lightweight pajamas
- Above 78°F (26°C+): Lightweight bodysuit only — no sleep sack necessary!
These combinations help keep your baby warm without risking overheating, even on cold winter nights.
Why Sleep Sacks Are a Winter Must-Have
Sleep sacks are designed to function as wearable blankets, which means:
- They regulate temperature safely
- They eliminate the need for loose blankets
- They’re easy to adjust seasonally by choosing the right TOG
If temperatures fluctuate in your home, some brands offer adjustable TOG sleep sacks, giving you even more control.

What Temperature Should My Baby’s Room Be? (AAP-Recommended Range)
In addition to choosing the right sleepwear, it’s helpful to know the ideal room temperature for safe baby sleep. The AAP recommends keeping the sleep environment between 68–72°F (20–22°C).
This range helps:
- Reduce the risk of overheating
- Support more restful, consolidated sleep
- Make layering and choosing TOG levels more predictable
If your home runs cooler in winter, you may need a slightly warmer TOG. If it runs warmer, lighter layers are safest.
What NOT to Use for Sleep (According to the AAP)
To keep winter sleep both warm and safe, avoid:
- Hats and mittens: They can slip over the face or become entangled.
- Loose socks: Optional, but they must fit well if used.
- Swaddling once baby shows signs of rolling: The AAP advises stopping swaddling at the first sign of rolling (or by about 8 weeks to be extra cautious).
- Bulky layers like coats or fleece suits: These interfere with your baby’s ability to regulate temperature safely.
Our Favorite Winter Sleep Layers
Simple, safe choices are best:
- Footed pajamas
- A well-fitting sleep sack with the appropriate TOG
- A fitted long-sleeve bodysuit if the nursery runs cool
No heavy or bulky items needed!
Final Thoughts: Keep Winter Sleep Warm, Safe, and Simple
Parents often overestimate how much warmth their baby needs during winter nights.
But with the right combination of pajamas and a TOG-appropriate sleep sack, your baby will stay cozy without overheating.
If you’re unsure whether your baby is comfortable, check:
- Chest or back (not hands or feet — those naturally run cool)
- For signs of overheating like sweating, flushed cheeks, or damp hair
You’re doing great! Your baby can sleep safely and comfortably all winter long.
